The National Egg & Poultry Awards took place virtually on Wednesday 18th November.

Business excellence, outstanding individuals, and investment in the future were all celebrated at the National Egg & Poultry Awards 2020, held as a virtual event for the first time.

Business leaders from all the major egg and poultry firms and representatives from industry bodies gathered to watch the ceremony online along with finalists, their colleagues, friends and family, to celebrate the achievements from across the spectrum of the sector. TV presenter Mark Durden-Smith hosted the ceremony, where a total of 12 awards were handed out, covering all aspects of the industry from investment in poultry processing, through to innovation in new productions, through to veterinary care.

New for 2020 were three awards specifically designed to recognise young talent in the poultry sector: young vet of the year, young farmer of the year, and young processor of the year.

The National Egg & Poultry Awards was launched in 2018 as an annual event by Poultry Business magazine and Lewis Business Media to recognise excellence and innovation in the egg and poultry sectors. Now in its third year, the standard of entries from across the country was excellent.

Everything from innovative scrambled egg products, to record productivity on layer units, and excellence in pullet rearing was recognised with a judging panel made up of BPC chief executive Richard Griffiths, turkey farmer Paul Kelly, BEIC chief executive Mark Williams, poultry farmer Charles Bourns, NFU poultry advisor Gary Ford, and Poultry Business editor Chloe Ryan.

A special thanks to our sponsors, judging panel and co-organisers as without their support we simply would not be here today.

NPA chief executive Zoe Davies has won the 2020 Chris Brant Award (CBA) in recognition of the ‘massive contribution’ she continues to make to the British pig industry.

This year, Zoe and her small NPA team have dealt with a whole of issues of huge significance to the pig sector, including COVID-19, EU Exit, the fall out and risk to UK pigs from the continuing global spread of ASF, Defra’s new Welfare Code and various environmental issues.

The award, won last year by Wayland Farms’ Colin Stone, is named after the late pig farmer Chris Brant and recognises those who go the extra mile for the UK pig sector. Zoe, who was part of special joint NPA team award in 2016, was announced as the well-deserved 2020 winner by award sponsor and former NPA chairman Richard Longthorp during the National Pig Awards event, broadcast online on Monday afternoon.

In his citation, Richard said the judges always consider certain criteria, including service to the UK pig industry, the impact nominees have over a sustained period of time on the financial and physical resilience of the industry and how big a gap would be left if they were no longer there.

He added: “Well after much discussion and deliberation, one of the judges summed it all up very nicely:

“Fulfilling all the criteria, the most important for me is this. Without any exaggeration, there is one person whose absence would have a major, major impact on my business and the UK Pig Industry.”

“So, there you have it A joint recipient of a special award for services to the pig industry some years ago, now deservedly recognised in their own right for their massive contribution to the UK Pig Industry

That judge concluded – and others wholeheartedly agreed: “What that woman has done and continues to do for the industry, on – let’s face it – a shoestring of a budget, is absolutely immense.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, please charge your glasses or teacups or whatever you are drinking at this time of day and drink a toast to “That Woman”, Chief Executive of the National Pig Association, Zoe Davies.”

British Pig Association (BPA) chief executive Marcus Bates has won the prestigious David Black Award in recognition of his ‘outstanding contribution to the pig sector, both in the UK and overseas’.

The trophy was presented by AHDB pork sector board chairman Mike Sheldon during a short film shown at the National Pig Awards ceremony, which was broadcast online on Monday afternoon.

The award, which was inspired by Norfolk pig farmer David Black, has, for more than 60 years, been presented to individuals or businesses who have made an outstanding contribution to the success of the pig industry.

Marcus has led the BPA for more than 20 years and also been heavily involved in the development of the UK pig sector’s overseas trade. He is a director of the UK Export Certification Partnership, which works with Government on market access issues for red meat and livestock genetics, and sits on/chairs the advisory body, the Farm Animal Genetic Resources Committee (FAnGR).

Mr Sheldon said that in his two decades at the helm of the BPA, he has enabled pedigree pig breeders ‘to thrive and to enhance their reputation for delivering quality and diversity, not just in the UK but overseas as well’.

“He has played a vital role in encouraging the expanding number of small-scale pig producers to recognise the need to operate with good herd health and biosecurity, in order to protect their neighbouring pig-keepers and the national herd, something from which all pig producers, big and small, continue to benefit,” Mr Sheldon said.

“Thirdly, in his role as Chairman of Export Certification Ltd, Marcus understands better than anyone how to pick your way through the minutiae of export certification, and has been instrumental in the growing success of British exporters of breeding stock and pork products.

“He has worked tirelessly on all three fronts, and the David Black Award is a richly deserved accolade for his immense contribution across all levels of the British pig industry.”

Marcus said he was ‘genuinely shocked’ to get the call from AHDB’s strategy director Angela Christison and was ‘deeply honoured and humbled to receive this award’.

“The organisation I work for, the British Pig Association celebrates its 21st birthday this month alongside the National Pig Association,” he said.

“I am really proud to have worked in this industry for the last three decades. An industry that hasn’t relied on government subsidies, that works together to create solutions that benefit all producers both big and small.

“Rare breed pigs and Chinese pork exports might seem like strange bedfellows. But they are both at risk from Exotic Disease. We must ensure that we have a breeds at risk policy that works on farm backed up a national gene bank. We must be ready to implement agreed regionalisation policies so that we can continue exporting.

“But most of all we need to keep working together as an industry. One of our greatest strengths has been co-operation. When we go to government with a united position and a possible solution we make it easy for them to work with us in a positive way so that we can deliver results for those who really matter our producers and their pigs.”

THE NATIONAL SQP AWARDS TO BE HELD VIRTUALLY

This year’s National SQP Awards will be live streamed at 4pm on Thursday 5th November.

The decision to make this year’s awards virtual was in response to the Government guidelines and advice surrounding the coronavirus pandemic. While we are obviously disappointed that we will not be able to bring the industry together in person, we are excited to be able to deliver the National SQP Awards in a different format.

To register to view the awards, please CLICK HERE

2020 Finalists
After a highly successful event in 2019, this year’s awards programme was popular again with SQPs from across the UK and the virtual judging session, held earlier this month, saw many deliberations. The quality of entries was at an all-time high and it was great to receive more entries in every category, which is a testament to how important the awards are among SQPs. SQPs this year certainly proved that they want to be recognised at the National SQP Awards.
